Did the Recent Storm Uproot Your Life?

Several months ago, several Ontarians were faced with a terrible weather storm resulting in many families losing loved ones, experiencing power outages, property damage, floods, and spoiled food. It’s not always easy to determine what the next steps should be.

It is important to be reminded that many home insurance policies provide coverage for damage that has been caused by hail, snow, wind, and rain, which includes falling branches or trees. Any damage caused to your vehicle as a result of the storm is usually covered through your auto insurance policy, pending the coverage the insured selected for.

The most common instinct in such situations is to contact your insurance company to notify them of the damages. This may be a call to your home insurance or automobile insurance company, depending on what was damaged from the storm. When you file a claim with your insurance company, you may be responsible for paying your deductible as this does count as a claim on your insurance policy.

However, it is important to keep in mind that prior to informing your insurance company of the damages, it is crucial that you document and record the damages caused by the storm. This can be done simply by taking photos and/or videos with your cell phone, to preserve the extent of the damages.

In some circumstances, the extent of the damage to your home requires immediate repair to prevent further damage. In this case, make sure to keep all receipts for any repairs completed for damages arising as a result of the storm.

Due to the high volume of people affected by the storm, it is expected to take longer than usual to get a hold of or be assigned to an adjuster for your claim. Oftentimes, people avoid seeking compensation for such circumstances due to the lengthy wait and process. With our help, we can make this hard time as smooth as possible for you.
