Cyclist Safety – Helmets and Proper Equipment Matter

Cyclist

Cycling is a popular and eco-friendly mode of transportation in Ontario, but safety should always be a top priority. Whether you're commuting, exercising, or enjoying a leisurely ride, here are key safety guidelines to ensure you stay protected on the road.

1.Helmet Safety Tip: How to Choose and Wear a Bike Helmet Properly

Choosing the right helmet is essential for safe cycling. Always pick a helmet that fits well and has a safety certification sticker (CSA, Snell, ANSI, ASTM, British or Australian Standard).

Use the “2-V-1” Helmet Fit Test:

  • 2 fingers between your eyebrows and the helmet.
  • V shape straps should sit under each ear.
  • 1 finger under the chin strap for a snug but comfy fit.

2. Always perform a Pre-Ride Safety Check. Before heading out, perform the ABCD check:

A: Air – Ensure tires are properly inflated.

B: Brakes – Test both front and rear brakes.

C: Chain – Check the chain for lubrication and proper tension.

D: Drop – Ensure nothing is loose or damaged on the bike.

3. Clothing and Visibility

  • Wear Bright or Reflective Clothing: Especially when riding at dawn, dusk, or night.
  • Proper Footwear: Wear closed-toed, flat shoes that fit securely and do not slip off the pedals.
  • Avoid Loose Clothing: Ensure clothing doesn't get caught in the wheels or chain.

Safe Cycling: Tips That Can Save Lives

While legal protections exist, the best protection is prevention. Here are a few simple but effective safety tips:

  • Always wear a helmet—even if you’re over 18
  • Use front/rear lights and reflective clothing
  • Ride in a straight line and follow all traffic rules
  • Avoid distractions—no headphones or texting
  • Don’t ride in crosswalks
  • Signal your turns
  • Maintain at least 1 metre from parked cars
