Informed Consent – Plastic Surgery and Cosmetic Procedures

Doctor draws lines on woman's face to prepare for plastic surgery

What is consent? What is informed consent?

The word consent means to give approval or permission. Informed consent of a patient for a plastic surgery or another cosmetic procedure includes the participation of the patient in a clinical intervention after achieving an understanding of the relevant medical facts and the risks involved.

Providing an informed consent is an important role with regards to all medical treatments. The complexity of cosmetic and/or plastic surgeries leads to deeper differences of information between plastic/cosmetic surgeons and patients. So, the discussion on providing information to a patient is of great importance. In fact, correct operative information should always be shared with the patients. Including probable complications and alternative procedures should be presented to the patient to choose an operative option freely and without any coercion.

The duty to inform seeks to protect the patient’s interests in self decision making.

A written informed consent form remains an integral part of the communication between physicians and patients to ensure patients’ rights are protected.

If you have suffered a cosmetic procedure related injury and believe it was due to your uninformed consent, then you may be eligible to receive the help you deserve. Contact JEWELL RADIMISIS JORGE LLPand a member of our team will be happy to assist you.
