What is a PFOA and why is it in women’s feminine hygiene products?

The brand Carefree was recently sued due to the presence of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in their pantyliners.

What is PFOA?

PFOA is a group of chemicals known as polyfluoroalkyl substances or PFAS which have also been labelled as ‘forever chemicals’ because they do not break down easily.

Prolonged exposure to PFOA has been linked to health issues including high cholesterol, liver damage, developmental effects, immune system disruption and increased risk of some cancers.

The lawsuit was filed last month in Los Angeles.

Studies show that PFOA and other PFAS can remain in one’s body for up to 50 years and increases the chances of low weights at birth and developmental delays.

There has also been recent concerns about the presence of toxic metals and the same ‘forever chemicals’ in tampons.

Most recently, Costco was sued with a class-action lawsuit claiming that Kirkland brand baby wipes also contain harmful levels of PFOAs and PFAS.

The team at JEWELL RADIMISIS JORGE LL.P strongly encourages everyone to engage in safe practices and stay informed on the products you purchase for you and your family.
